Even after they had left home she continued to try and divert them from their coarse. Finally succeeding when she convinced the children they would like to visit an old plantation home she had visited during her own childhood. There were many clues as to what was unfolding during the story, although one would have trouble noticing them upon initial reading. The first of the clues was, of coarse, the mentioning of â€Å"The Misfit’s† escaping from prison. As the family was eating at a small restaurant the second clue was given. The owner was discusing with grandmother the criminal nature the society has compared to the old day an example was three men had stolen gas from him only a few days earlier. The next clue came after grandmother and the children persuaded Bailey to turn off the main road in search of the old plantation home. The road had not been driven on in months, suggesting the perfect, deserted, hiding places for escaped prisoners. While traveling down the dirt road grandmother remembered that the house was actually in Tennessee, not Georgia. This caused her to jump, scaring the cat she had hidden in her basket. The cat jumped onto Bailey’s neck and head causing them to have a major accident. While sitting on the bank trying to recuperate from the accident a car drives down the road. The Role Of Powerless Language And Nonverbal Communication...

Introduction Being able to communicate effectively is crucial to one’s success in the business world. While accountants are often stereotyped as being socially inept, employers consistently look to hire students who are able to function in a team based environment. Throughout the course of their careers, accountants will interact with hundreds of people of varying status and prestige. Therefore, to be successful in this field, an aspiring accountant must be comfortable interacting with everyone from staff accountants to top executives. Accordingly, is important for someone at the beginning of their career to step back and evaluate their ability to communicate across a wide variety of situations. Powerless Language/Talk Nonverbal Communication Before looking at the areas of communication apprehension, it is important to evaluate ones use of powerless language and nonverbal communication. Powerless language can include hesitations like â€Å"um â€Å", as well as hedges like â€Å"seem to† or â€Å"probably†. Ultimately, I find myself doing both of these quite often. For example, while I am fairly comfortable public speaking, I often throw in filler words like â€Å"um†, which can ultimately dilute my message. In addition, when giving critical feedback to group members, I find myself using hedges in order to be polite. This is most likely related to my apprehension to interpersonal communication discussed in the next section. I often use disclaimers for same reason. Academic Integrity Using Technology to Cheat free essay sample

With the advent of modern technology bypassing check-and-balance systems that are in place to keep people honest have become extremely easy to bypass; for example, in the sasss individuals would borrow VS. cassettes and copy them; however, technology has changed and advanced since then, ND with more advanced technology more people are using technology to cheat. An example of using modern technology to bypass a check-and- balance system is Anapest. Anapest began as a service that allowed people to download music for free without purchasing the CD; bypassing the copyright on the music. There were students who copied the music from Anapest, who said everyone else is doing it why cant l. (Jones, 2008). Most people who copied VS. tapes, along with those who copied music from Anapest, usually did not think that what they were doing was cheating, or stealing; however, by definition it was. How is it cheating? Some may ask. When individuals copy things that do not belong to them, they rob the original producer out of the profits that they would have made by proper distribution. As we look at this, our question began with why students cheat, how students cheat and what are professors, colleges, educators doing to prevent cheating by the students. We find that there are an ever increasing number of students who are using technology various ways to cheat. Students have cheated on homework, since the first homework assignment was assigned to students; however, in recent years students have found new ways to cheat. This leads to Professors and other educators to find more creative ways educate the students, which also forces educators to find more creative ways of reducing and prevent cheating. We can all say that we know that cheating is something that we have been taught as being wrong. Many of us would think of our moral values and our attitudes about cheating as a way to explain why we would never try to cheat. Today students are using these same reasons to say why they do cheat. Another reason why students cheat is because of their influences around them, some may even cheat because its socially accepted amongst the dents that they are around. Its the old story of who the student hangs around they become somewhat like. This is something some people can remember being brought up with.We were told who you hang around with you become like. For some reason when you know someone who cheats on a test and gets away with it we figure, why dont I try it, they did it, cheating must be easier then studying for this test. Some students cheat because they need a higher grade to get the scholarship to attend school, and to keep their parents to be proud of them. The stresses from home can be very high especially when we are talking about finances to tend college which can add unnecessary pressure on the student. Usually once an assignment is given everyone goes and works on it.There are many different students who gather together in teams to work on papers today then there was ever before. Even with this there are still some students and teams of students who cheat because they did not take the time to study, and because of not taking the time to study they now are in a hurry to get things done. A research survey geared toward cheating was given to students in 12 colleges in the United States and abroad stated that engineering students ere more likely to cheat as 60% to 90% of engineering students admitted to cheating. (Harding, 2004).Harding also states that both technology and cultural norms play a role in the increase of students who cheat. Students look at what cheating is, and find easier ways of cheating with help of modern technology and how it has shaped our culture. 90% of students who cheat are likely to continue to cheat or violate policies later in life. (Harding, 2004). Looking at the various options students have available to cheat, students are able to use several readily available services that can be easily accessed on the internet. Websites such as Free Essay Network (http:// www. Freebases. Mom/) have become very popular as they offer an essay sharing network. One of the most popular tools available students on the internet is Google. Googles search system allows users to perform very detailed and specific searches, even allowing user to search for specific file types such as Microsoft Word documents, Adobe Reading documents, which are popular formats for academic material. An article featured in the Minnesota State University Reporter states plagiarism has also become a big business as some companies provide preprinted papers, presentations, and other assignments student may seek.In addition to these services some companies also offer custom research at a premium. (Skates, 2003) With everything that is available to students, it can seem overwhelming to educators who have to combat cheating; however, educators are not as behind the curve as some students may think. According to a recent trial in the United Kingdom, the exam board Deduced has that its technique of tagging papers with radio transmitters and applying microscopic identificati on to individual papers has proved successful in reducing cheating attempts by students. Smith, 2008). According to Deduced the radio free ounce works similar to anti-theft devices that are used by retail stores to product their stock. Smith goes on to state that The boards security system works by attaching radio frequency devices to a batch of exam papers before they are sent on to their waiting establishment of learning. Once attached, the devices are scanned before dispatch and tracked throughout the journey to ensure a safe and unhampered arrival. (Smith, 2008).In addition to the high tech security systems applied directly to individual papers, Deduced has also implemented a system that utilizes bar codes that re affixed to individuals papers as well; all in an attempt to create a fail safe environment that discourages cheating by students. (Smith, 2008). The United Kingdom is not the only place where educators, academic professionals, and those interested in academic honesty have developed a high tech system to help prevent academic cheating. In the United States software manufacture, Software Secure, has recently release its Secure Remote Protector system that provides a secure environment for distance learning. (Kept, 2007). As the number of students who use distance learning increase, so does the keel hood that students will cheat in their distance learning studies; since technology has made cheating increasingly easier in the class room, one can only assume that technology has made cheating in the distance learning classroom even easier. This is why education institutions, educators, and academic professionals have been developing ways to combat distance learning cheating since the beginning of distance learning. Software Secure has deployed its Secure Remote Protector system in more than 300 academic institutions so far, and is planning on deploying in even more institutions in the future. The reason that system Software Secure developed has become so popular is because of the different layers of security it implement s into the academic process. For instance, online tests have been locked down, preventing users from accessing anything else on the computer except the test they are working on. The Secure Remote Protector system also utilizes biometric authentication to identify the test taker, before the test is administered to the student. The last layer of security that the Secure Remote Protector implements is real-time video capturing that can capture any suspicious activity before, during, or after the est. taking process. This video is available in real time and recorded to educators and academic professionals. (Kept, 2007). Colleges, Universities, and other academic institutions are not the only ones who must combat technology that is being used to cheat. In Meridian, Idaho students began using digital media players to cheat on tests and exams; because a few students used their digital media players to cheat, officials at the Mountain View High School created a policy that bans digital media player. Students who use digital media players to cheat have found very creative ways of doing so. For instance, students may hide the answers to a text in the lyrics of a particular song, prerecord the answers and listen to them while the take the test, or students may even use the song itself to cheat on a test. (Associated press, 2007). The actions by a few students who decide to use technology to cheat do more than rob those students of the learning process; it also takes away privileges that honest students enjoy.Kelsey Nelson who is a 17 year old student at Mountain View High School said that she used to be able to listen to music after she had completed her tests; however, with the new ban on digital Edie players she is no longer able to do this. Nelson also indicated that the ban has not prevented students from cheating. (Associated press, 2007). Going forward the challenges that academic professionals face in combating students who use technology will be perpetual; a game of cat-and-mouse with the students who, up to this point, have been further ahead of the technology than their teachers. This trend is unlikely to change; however, as younger teachers, instructors, professors, and academic professionals battle technology that is used to cheating, the technology gap between students and their teachers will become smaller. As this gap becomes smaller, and newer technologies are developed to counteract technological cheating, students may see a time when they are not able to easily use technology to cheat. When this time comes, students will more than likely find another medium to use for cheating.

The desktop can create the accounting system with the technique set for the redundancy of the data. The capability is mai nly to work on the system requirements and to use the firewall for the encryption of the data. Xero has been able to handle the techniques with the data encryption through the usage of the industry standards which are for the access to the different data centers and the servers. The control is mainly based on performing all the regulations with the security audits in the effective manner. To handle the control of the data audits access, there is a need to check on the running time of the same, where the users can also check on the controlling of information access as well as working on the personal information system access. (Postcode, 2010). There are extra security steps for the authentication to handle and protect the account. This will also allow the software company to work on the financial information which is only shared with some of the employees. Recommendation The best possibility for the system is to use the SaaS model which can handle the data and the other information which is related to the system functioning. There is a need to use the firewalls for the encryption of the data with the users who are set for the applications with operations in the cloud infrastructure.(Newburn, 2014). The simple web browser setup includes the transformation with the landscape that has been set for the IT standards with the better and the faster time to market and handle the innovation process. There is a need to measure the scale of the demand as well as working on the cloud computing techniques in an effective manner. Conclusion For the system processing, there are certain risks which are seen when relating to the issues of the cybercrime. For this, there is a need to access the changes with the challenges that are set with the Identify Management to carry the authentication process. (Mhetre et al., 2014). For the services and the users, there is a need to make use of all the important characteristics which works on controlling the data as well as the other credentials when it is related to the self-defending power. As per the research, the accounting software has been able to handle the development with the invention which is mainly based on the providing of the better software support to the small and the medium based organizations. TQM is an intricate approach aimed at improving the value of processes by consistently checking for deficiencies in these products and services (Sashkin Kiser, 1993).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Total Quality Management (TQM) specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More TQM is equally indispensable in the administration of hotels. It determines consumer contentment in terms of value of services provided. Nonetheless, measuring value still remains one of the concerns in the hospitality segment. It is crucial to apply TQM as a systematic approach; however, this is not enough to maintain it in an organization. TQM can be lucratively implemented in management of hotels by first recognizing customers as the most essential component of a transaction. This means paying attention to their responses. There should always be a balance between the initial expectations of clients and how they view the service received. A service ca n be considered of high quality if it meets or exceeds client expectations (Sanders Graham, 1992). Quality of processes provided can be improved by evaluating competitor’s performance. An outstanding provider pays attention to concepts pertaining to timeliness. It is the responsibility of a manager to make certain employees provide services on demand within the agreed time. Integrity is also vital; it entails completeness of the service that an organization provides. Employees should always follow the right procedures during provision of services. TQM is also implemented by coming up with measurement steps, which gives it, coherence. Statistical analysis of the processes helps in highlighting possible shortcomings in products and associated services. The results derived from the measurement methods are quite vital in making sound decisions (Mukherjee, 2006). An executive in the hospitality industry can constantly progress the quality of processes offered in various ways. On e can induce personnel to embrace teamwork directed towards quality culture. Employees should be assisted so that they can improve job performance by eliminating barriers. These may incorporate lack of quality materials that aid duties. Job performance can also be enhanced by providing sufficient and relevant training in TQM as well as other areas of work. TQM requires managers to distinguish achievement. Symbolic rewards such as certifications should be accompanied by material recompense (Sashkin Kiser, 1993).Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The thriving realization of TQM in an organization by an executive can be evaluated in various ways. Employees should embrace and sustain a tradition of TQM. Successful achievement of TQM involves acknowledging consumers’ needs. It also entails establishing clients’ wants, which should be, written down and explored. Con sumer desires eventually translate to the processes that distinguish an organization. The processes developed should be understood by those within the company. The administration of an organization should ensure that the processes developed satisfy the needs of customers. Finally, administration should derive a means of providing processes with exemplary standards (Sashkin Kiser, 1993). TQM initiative is poorly implemented by organizations on numerous occasions. This is evident when a company does not demonstrate objectivity in improving their products and service through the provision of long-term plans for education and research. Such organizations focus on profits that are termed as short-term in nature. TQM cannot be productively implemented if an institute disregards the needs of the customers (Sashkin Kiser, 1993). An organization that inadequately attends to client feedback, and lacks methods of evaluation is likely to fail. References Mukherjee, P.N. (2006). Total Quality Management. Mumbai: PHI Learning Pvt. A Molestation Epidemic †Essay

A Molestation Epidemic – Essay Free Online Research Papers If you have a daughter, she has a one in five chance of being sexually abused before she turns twelve. One in five little girls under the age of twelve has been molested nationally by someone claiming the only thing they are guilty of is love. Through this paper, you will find facts and statistics showing that 92% of sexually abused children are not molested by some unknown on the street, but by a relative, close family friend or person of authority. You will discover that most molestations are not one-time offenses but continue for months and sometimes years before ever being disclosed. You will also learn the shockingly high number of white middle to upper-class offenders. This author will explore the offenders control over their victim and attempt to explain the victim’s silence. Lastly, we will look at the ability to rehabilitate and reintegrate sexual predators safely into society. Across our country the statics are startling; one in five female children are molested before reaching the tender age of five. While this appears as a staggering number the truth of the matter is these are only the number of cases reported. Officials feel the numbers are actually closer to one in three nationwide. What is even more alarming is the realization that these children are not targeted by some random individual off the street. In fact, ninety-two percent of molestations are carefully planned out by someone the family knows and trusts. In most cases, this individual is a step-father, father, uncle, cousin or family friend. These offenders lure a child into silence in a plethora of ways; they spend a very long time building trust with the child and family. Molestation isn’t something that just happens; molesters spend a great deal of time grooming the child. The more time they have to groom their victim, the least likely their victim is to speak. Young children are coerced into silence through a variety of different gifts, everything from puppies or kittens to snowboards, jewelry, make-up, a special food treat, or concert. If the offender feels like he might be losing his grip on her silence he will generally threaten harm, but not towards the child, instead to the child’s mother, sibling or favorite pet thus again ensuring obedient silence. Older children if groomed properly tend to become obsessed with the romance of the older man in love with the little girl. The molester will tell the child they love them, want them to replace the woman they are currently with, stress that nobody understands them as well as the child. Promise them everything their parents say no to, drinking, drugs, parties, and helping to hide boyfriends. This method works well with pre-teens and young teens that are trying desperately to establish their identity and want to be taken seriously and treated more maturely. These children are already in puberty, their bodies are changing and they are becoming curious. Male offenders will pray upon this approaching the child with innocent lessons. Playing the â€Å"you don’t want to be a klutz your first-time† card gets the molester in with the child who’s already afraid of disappointing boys with their lack of sexual knowledge. The girls commonly targeted are shy, quiet, and independent. It is thought that this combination in a child creates a doorway for the molester since the child is already antisocial. More often than not molesters are men; however, the number of female molesters is on the rise. Approximately twice as many incidents involve girls rather than boys (Hall). While most young men would view touching or even sex with an older woman as a â€Å"score† or good thing the number of women reported is up by twelve percent over the last five years (Child Molestation Research and Prevention Institute). Women offenders generally will target young boys, who are outcasts, loaners, the â€Å"geeks†, boys who are unpopular with the girls. Women offenders will show the boy love and affection, preying on the boys need to feel masculine, telling him he’s her protector, he’s so strong anything that will bolster his self-esteem and cause her to be the object of his affection. The early education of young boys has aided in the increasing numbers of women offenders; however, the larger increase is coming from women molesting girls. Girls tend to be more prone t o report a female offender than a male; experts believe that this is because as girls reach puberty they become more obstinate against their mothers, thus resisting female authority. It has been found that girls who get in trouble at school generally are having problems with another female, either a teacher they think has pushed too far, or a peer that has an opposing view to their own. Another very startling fact to most people is where this heinous act is found. A very common misconception is that only lower class minorities need to worry. In reality, it is exactly the opposite. More reported offenders are Caucasian males of middle or upper class between the ages of 30-50. Your child’s best friend’s father, your brother, your cousin, your husband or your father are all to be considered potential offenders. The most common place form of child molestation is by an immediate family member. In one in seven cases of child molestation, the offender is the male in a father figure role, the biological father, stepfather or adoptive father. One in thirteen reported cases of molestation are uncles, cousins or brothers. (Gretchen Turner, Nora Harlow, and Whitney Gabriel.) Molesters never LOOK like anything but a normal everyday hardworking individual. They are family men, pastors, teachers, coaches people whom everyone assumes is a friend and a safe place for their child. Forty percent of all molestations end in some form of the medical condition, often it is this condition that causes the offender to be revealed. Out of forty percent of molestation cases, three percent end in pregnancy which leads to the prosecution of the offender. One percent results in HIV which as we all know has not only no cure but will generally lead to death. Sixty-three percent are infected with the incurable venereal disease herpes, which generally comes as a shock to parents because with smaller children it’s a very nasty, painful sore that causes them to reveal it to their parents. Fifteen percent are diagnosed with other types of venereal disease’ many putting the child at risk of infertility when they get older. The remaining eighteen percent are either injured or treated for physical problems that again can cause many issues as the girl gets older. In the end, all children need very intense therapy. (Kenneth V. Lanning) While the law has taken a very strong stance on this crime over the last ten years the system is still flawed. While convicted offenders are required by law to register with local authorities around 50% do not. Let us take a brief look at the word convicted. The definition of convicted is transitive verb 1 : to find or prove to be guilty 2 : to convince of error or sinfulness intransitive verb: to find a defendant guilty (2009) . These individual have to be convicted criminally, however, only about 25% of cases are ever actually prosecuted. â€Å"The burden of proof is far too high† says Firestone District Attorney Craig Merrit, â€Å"Juries simply do not want to believe that this crime is happening in their community, or that this man that looks like the epitome of middle-class suburbia could possibly do this to his daughter. They prefer to think that the child saw it on T.V. so it’s happening to them. Often the defense in these cases force the child to take the witness stand, most become disoriented, their stories start changing because of confusing questions and that alone gives a jury reasonable doubt. While as a DA I want to see every one of these jerks behind bars, the reality of the situation is if I don’t have very hard physical proof and I mean major damage, bruises, tearing, pregnancy or seamen, I won’t prosecute because it’s far too hard on the children† (Craig Merrit). Many times when the offender is a parent, older sibling or someone living within the home child protective services files what is called a Dependant and Neglected case, or DN. This type of case is done on a civil level and is used alongside and in many cases in lieu of a criminal case. The burden of proof is much lower in a DN case because it is civil, in these cases they only have to think something happened. This causes the offender to have a restraining order filed although they do not have to register as sex offenders, nor do they ever have any record of what they have done. The major downfall to a DN case is it is also filed against the nonoffending parent or parents and in order for the children to receive proper therapeutic services the nonoffending parents must plead guilty. While this causes no marks upon their records and causes no problems in background checks, it does often cause the parents much personal discomfort. Sadly there seems to be no cure for this crime. According to the article For sex offenders, the dispute on therapys benefits (Goodnough Davey) only approximately 12% of sex offenders is able to be rehabilitated. Faulted for this unbelievable number is low conviction rates and low release rates. Parole boards, are responsible for the release of offenders and simply do not feel comfortable placing sex offenders back on the streets without some form of assurance from the offender. Most child sex offenders around 73% (Lanning) begin grooming their next victim within the first year of their release. Strangely, close to the same number of offenders falls off the tracking radar as swiftly. Another factor that is blamed for the low rehabilitation rates is the lack of true honesty among the offenders. Most of those guys, they are just faking it to make it, Mr. Carlin said. Theyre just waiting to get released so they can go right back to what they were doing. (Goodnough Davey) Through reading this paper it is this author’s sincerest hope that you have gleaned an understanding of this heinous crime. Girls from all walks of life are vulnerable and the predators are right in their own living room. Children remain silent for many reasons, some are frightened, others are ashamed but each child needs to be reminded that this was not their fault. Recovery from a sex crime can take a lifetime; parents need to remain vigilant for the signs not only from their children, but the people they allow around their children. Sex crimes are not to be taken lightly nor is it to be believed that offenders can safely reintegrate. Sexual offenders may know what they have done is wrong, but will not change their actions without continual intervention. Gene G Abel, M.D., and Nora Harlow (2001). QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS FOR MANAGEMENT Research Paper

QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS FOR MANAGEMENT - Research Paper Example However, if we analyze the number of cars that travel the road 3-6, we can see that despite the street’s ability to accept 7 thousand cars, there are only 6. The same situation happens on the road 4-8, whose capacity is 8, but it accepts 4 thousand. In total, such difference of both roads gives us the lack of 1+4 = 5 thousands. This means that genuine maximum number of cars that may actually travel from the stadium to the interstate per hour is 33–5 = 28 thousands. These calculations can be easily proved with the help of special statistical program. Hence, QM for Windows gives the following results: The maximum network flow differs from the forecast of Dr. Lee because a member of the University Planning Committee has not taken into account traffic jams and traffic delays. Due to imperfect distribution of cars among the streets, not all roads are taken by the exact number of cars that such streets are able to accept. For instance, the capacity of the road 1-2 is 12000 meanwhile 15000 cars travel by this route. This mismatch will cause traffic jams and the waste of time. These 3000 cars could easily travel by the road 1-4 without jamming, which capacity allows additional flow of cars. 2. If the cost for expanding a street were the same for each street, which street(s) would you recommend expanding to increase the capacity to 33,000? Which streets would you recommend expanding to get the total capacity of the system to 35,000 per hour? In case the price for expanding a street is equal for every road, in order to reach the capacity of 33000 cars, I would recommend expanding the road 1-4 so that it could accept 9000 instead of 6000 cars and the road 1-3, which number of cars would increase from 12000 to 14000. In addition, it is essential to expand any or both streets 6-8 and 7-8 because, taking into account that a node 8 can be reached by three roads,

The incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome SIDS in Australia Essay

The incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome SIDS in Australia - Essay Example (NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service, 1997) Babies die from SIDS at all times of the day and night, in cots, prams, car seats, and bassinettes and even in their parent's arms. "With the better education about the risks of SIDS, the number of deaths has been reduced by more than 50 per cent over the last six years." (Horgan, 1995 pp.22-24) "Although the cause of SIDS is still a mystery, research in Australia and other parts of the world suggests it's possible for parents, grandparents and other carers to lower the risk in these simple ways". (Jones Michael Dr, 2006) Since parents in Australia and across the rest of the world have changed how babies are put down for sleep, fewer babies have died from SIDS. However, SIDS can still occur even when all the known risk factors have been ruled out. (SIDS and Kids, 2005a) In Australia, SIDS accounts for the deaths of more babies between the ages of one month and one year than all who die of cancer, heart disease, pneumonia, child abuse, AIDS, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy combined. In the United States SIDS is responsible for more deaths than any other cause in childhood for babies one month to one year of age, claiming 150,000 victims in this generation alone 7,000 babies each year, nearly one baby every hour of every day. (BHC, 2006c) SIDS occurs at any time of the day or night and most babies die quietly in their sleep. (Better Health Channel, 2006a) "Although it is more common in babies between the ages of two to four months it happens to younger and older babies also, this syndrome occurs in both bottle-fed and breastfed babies. There is a 60 to 40 percent male to female ratio. 60 per cent babies are boys who die. It occurs in families of all races, ethnic and socioeconomic origins without warning. SIDS occurrence is quite sudden, neither parent nor physician can predict that something is wrong. Most SIDS victims appear healthy prior to death." (AAP American academy of Pediatrics, 2005 pp.1245-1255) Researchers believe that babies who die of SIDS are born with one or more conditions that make them especially vulnerable to stresses that occur in the normal life of an infant, including both internal and external influences. "SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion. A death is diagnosed as SIDS only after all other alte rnatives have been eliminated." (Mage & Donner, 2004 pp.1210-1215) SIDS is very rare syndrome. The number of SIDS deaths remained constant despite fluctuations in the overall number of infant deaths. The National Center for Health Statistics NCHS reported that, in 1988 in the United States, 5,476 infants under 1 year of age died from SIDS in 1989, the number of SIDS deaths was 5,634 (NCHS,1990 p. 33). "However, other sources estimate that the number of SIDS deaths may actually be closer to 7,000". (Goyco, Beckerman, 1990 pp. 299-346) The larger estimate represents additional cases that are unreported or underreported the cases that were not reported as SIDS. More than 4999 out of every 5000 babies in South Australia do not die from SIDS. Although SIDS is the most common cause in Australia of death for babies between 1 month and 12 months old, but it is still rare. (NCHS, 1992 p. 44) Causes of SIDS: While there are still no adequate medical explanations for SIDS deaths, current theories include: (1) Stress in a normal baby caused by infection or other factors (2) A birth defect (3)

Analytic Commentary Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Analytic Commentary - Essay Example This play shows his creativity as he remembers rules of road crossing as taught by his mother. But throughout the conversation, his focus on cat rescue remains his major objective. Theoretical background To a large extent, verbal communication especially pretence play and other forms of expression encompass a similar beginning (Loizou 2005). Although they constitute modes of communication, resultant meanings could be diverse but comprise of important aspects of important communication. The above case is an example of understanding language development in children undergoing the pre-operational stage. In Piaget’s cognitive development theory, early education that entails the use of the use of appropriate vocabulary to create sense constitutes a series of word plays which begin with nonsensical initiations. As evident from the play, some words Adrian uses in the play appear to be newly learnt and thus he struggles to create meaning with them. These words then form a foundation o f basic vocabulary that constitutes his ability to use appropriate words to create interpersonal communication skills. Since language is pivotal in a child’s communication, unique language behaviour from parents has varied influences on their children’s verbal skills (Brown, Donelan & Dunn 2009). Among them are variations in pronunciation. As evident from the play, Adrian struggles to get the word ‘ambu- lance’ right since his verbal communication skills are still youthful and dependent on parental influence. Accompanying such tonal variations include pitch variations. As Adrian struggles to get some words right, his pitch also changes staggeringly in attempts to get the right pronunciation. These, according to Piaget’s cognitive development theory, are normal occurrences in children at Adrian’s age. As the game progresses, Adrian’s cognitive skills can be seen as concrete. At his age, according to Piaget’s cognitive theory, chi ldren at the ages of four to five exhibit strong memories, mental clarities and use complex language to supplement their narratives (Terzi 2010). Throughout the play, Adrian does not falter to show drifting away from the play. He keeps within it and completes his mission as commenced. Although he involves many characters within it, he never loses track of his mission. This is an indication that children have adopted clear mental abilities and their cognitive abilities are able to store memories for a sustained period of time (Brown, Donelan & Dunn 2009). Parental role in supporting children is thinking. Uses of varying situations within pretence plays make the languages applied highly dynamic (Clough & Corbett 2000). Adrian’s parents use different situations which includes their demand to know where he is heading to, what is along the way and what else he can see as questioned in numbers, 4,7,10 and 12 which make language highly dynamic. Maintaining the same language for chil dren in Adrian’s age creates complexities for them. In order to create a lasting play and sustain the child’s interest in the play, the parent should involve lively language. Adrian in this case is given the same approach when his parents keep changing his language through choice of events and thus choice of words. The play becomes livelier from engagement of questions in the play all along while he keeps driving his parents and his cat to the hospital. The ability to improvement language communication in children especially as

Existence of God Debate Philosophy

Existence of God Debate Philosophy The argument on whether God is existent or non-existent is one that has lasted for decades. Some philosophers and theologians have argued on both sides but a solid evidence for or against the existence of God have not been provided. However, several proofs for or against Gods existence have been provided. The paper argues on the basis of the non-existence of God from a philosophical point of view. Theories such as the problem of evil, principle of nature, and the parsimony arguments demonstrate that God does not exist and religion is a just a mere belief created in human minds. Apparently, God is not omnipresent, omnibenevolent, omniscience, or omnipotent. Introduction The idea of God is almost global among societies of the human race, although it has different cultural definitions. The arguments in support of and those against Gods existence have been proposed by several scientists, philosophers, and theologians. In accordance with Murray and Rea (2008) philosophically, the arguments for and against Gods existence involve chiefly the ontology (nature of being) and epistemological (theory of knowledge) sub-disciplines as well as the theory of value because perfection concepts are often connected with notions of God (157). However, the debate on Gods existence has raised quite a number of philosophical issues. The main problematic issue is the existence of both polytheistic and monotheistic perceptions. Some definitions of the existence of God are so non-specific while others are self-contradictory. It is possible to draw the conclusion that all definitions given on God by humans are probably false characterizations of what God accounts for the being of humans on earth and the universe (Everitt 159). Moreover, one can also conclude that the whole idea of any God has no basis since it is not backed by any evidence. Thirdly, it may be suggested that the intellect of humans is probably not sufficient to analyze concepts that are absolutely based on human understanding and beliefs, such as Gods existence as a creator. The key issue here is not whether God exists or not, but whether there is sufficient evidence to support his existence or non-existence (Murray and Rea 157). The religious beliefs of Gods existence are probably out of human emotional need for protection and belonging since there is no reliable evidence to support these arguments. God does not exist. Methodology Books by famous philosophers who have written on the non-existence of God will be used to gather sufficient information on the topic. The Bible will also be used to demonstrate the contradictory nature of God. Discussion According to Oppy and Scott (2010), God is unlimited goodness and therefore if God truly exists then there is no evil (82). However, considering that there is evil in the world, God doesnt exist. This reasoning makes a lot of sense because how could it be possible that God, an infinite goodness be created and as such protects a world full of corruption and imperfections. If God really existed then horrible and terrible things wouldnt occur in the world as they do today. For instance, there would be no starvation like there is in third world countries where thousands of grown ups and innocent children die of hunger every year. In addition, things like destructive wars which result to a lot of human anguish and suffering would not exist. In this context, the Holy Bible which is believed to be Gods absolute word condemns theft, murder, and adultery. In line with Khashaba (2006, it is quite difficult to believe that an all-knowing and powerful being that is infinitely-good created the entire world but is not capable of controlling the things that take place in it. Instead of just condemning them in an ancient book he could probably have abolished all forms of evil (119). Moreover, the same Bible says that God is a heavenly father. If that was the case, then he would have let his children to be good and free from like him hence wiping-out all evil from the face of the earth. According to Murray and Rea (2008), the non-existence of God may be proven by the principle of nature which is measurable, simple, and visible instead of believing in a complex being that can not be measured, perceived or conceived. As a matter of fact, scientific theories have provided explanations for natures existence and hence nature could be used to account for mankinds gradual development. This development has been explained by development of an organism that is single cell to one that is multi-cellular. On the other hand, evolution has explained the intelligence of the current man while the The Big Bang theory has explained the creation of planet earth (Murray and Rea 158). In contrast, those in support of the existence of God argue on the basis of the causation theory. The argument states that one thing causes another and thus there will be no effect if the first cause did not exist. However, the existence of this first cause can not be proven or even determined under any circumstances. For instance, The Big Bang theory existed and that is why it is possible to base earths creation on it. Nevertheless, something else that caused the existence of this theory must have existed initially. In line with Johnson (2006), Philosophical theology writers such as St. Anselm argue that if a person understands that a greater being exists though not able to explain its existence, then it exists in reality (50). Thus, if someone understands that God exists, then he must exist in reality. This argument is absolutely futile if there is no sufficient evidence to support it. The fact that someone understands the existence of God and entirely understands God does not imply that God actually exists. For instance, if one understands in their minds and entirely that ghosts exist, however this is not a guarantee that indeed ghosts exist. Its just like in movies where people entirely understand a character that they are supposed to represent and even practically portray that character. Definitely this does not make the movie character a reality (Oppy and Scott 102). Its often claimed that the biblical God is omnipresent (everywhere at all times, omnipotent (all-powerful), omnibenevolent (unlimitedly good), and omniscient (familiar with everything). From a logical point of view, these concepts are entirely impossible implying that God doesnt exist. The Bible says that nothing is impossible with God yet there are several instances in the same Bible where he was unable to do something. In relation to Murray and Rea (2008) The book of Judges 1:19ÂÂ  says that God was with Judah; he drove out the mountain inhabitants; but could not send away the valley inhabitants, because they had iron chariots (158).ÂÂ  If God was so compassionate then he would release people from the bondages of sin and destroy the devil who leads his people astray. At the same time, God would relieve humanity of the original sin penalty if he was omnipotent. Basically, if God was powerful and able yet he chooses to let human being suffer from sin, then its not logical to argue that he is omnibenevolent. In line with Everitt (2004), God should have erased the original sin and allowed men to be judged based on their own actions instead of paying for other peoples sins (154). On the same note, Christians say that God is omnipresent meaning that he is everywhere at the same time. If God was omnipresent then he would not have to walk like he says in the Bible that he shall walk with his people. There would be no need for him to relocate from one place to another in order to be with one of his since he already exist there. Similarly, God should never change his mind if at all he is omniscience because a change in mind demonstrates uncertainty. In relation to Oppy and Scott (2010) there are so many instances in the Bible where God changed his mind. For example, in the Exodus story where the children of Israel worshiped idols and God decided on destroying them, he later forgave them after Moses pleaded for forgiveness. This concept brings a lot of doubt on whether God really intended on destroying the Israelites or he was unable to do so yet he knew this would come to be (110). If God was in deed omnipresent and onmibenevolent he would prevent the occurrence of sin and destructive events. Conclusion/Recommendations There has been a significant attack on the conception of God as religion comes under a more intense scrutiny. Several theories and concepts have shown that God indeed doesnt exist. From an objective perception of the Bible, it is easy to see that God is not omnipresent, omniscience, omni benevolent, or omnipotent as claimed by the Bible. It is evident that the biblical God is contradictory and it is not possible that he exists. Moreover, there is no adequate evidence that the bible is not just an ordinary book. Principles such as The Big Bang can be used to explain the existence of nature hence can replace the belief that God exists. Theories of nature sufficiently explain the human beliefs in God and the development of religion. The issue of the existence of sin greatly challenges the existence of a God who is omnibenevolent and omnipotent. It is either that God exists and sin doesnt, or God doesnt exist but sin does. The existence of both is contradictory and it is not possible. Fu rther research and study may be necessary in understanding the existence or non-existence of God. Basically, there exists adequate evidence that there is no God though a concrete prove has not been discovered yet.

Glasses or No Glasses? â€Å"So, glasses or no glasses?† I’m trolling the hallway, nabbing every student I can find. My senior portrait sitting is tomorrow and I can’t decide: Glasses or no glasses? Maybe other people can give me their opinions. â€Å"Um, I think glasses,† said one of my neighbors, â€Å"but then again, Michael, you should know that I like it more when people wear glasses as a general rule.† â€Å"No glasses would be better,† said another. â€Å"Glasses, definitely. You have small eyes.† â€Å"No, no glasses I think.† So it went on and on. And on. Then finally, an interesting tidbit of advice: â€Å"So I think you should wear whatever you feel most comfortable in; whatever best reflects who you are—I mean, do you often wear glasses or not?† Ah, but there’s the rub. Sometimes I wear them, sometimes I don’t. I wear glasses when I read, because contacts dry out my eyes too fast. I wear glasses when I relax, or when I take a shower. On the other hand, I wear contacts when I play sports or get a haircut. So I guess my problem is simply this: I’m both glasses and no glasses. Now if a friend of mine were here, he would probably roll his eyes and say something along the lines of, â€Å"You know, glasses or no glasses doesn’t really matter. They’re only the superficial part of you. What’s really you is deep inside, and that part of you is the most important part. Glasses or no glasses, that part will shine through.† But see, that’s just the same problem right there, except it’s reworded to sound wiser. Do glasses not matter at all to the â€Å"real† me—to who I am?

Sirius XM Satellite Radio

For this particular assignment, I was to choose an existing, publically owned company to research and do a background report on. I decided to view the public companies link, provided on the module 1, Assignment 3 page, and I noticed that Sirius XM Satellite Radio, Inc. was rated #1 in top stocks by trade volume. I found it impressive that it was ranked higher than Facebook and Microsoft Corp. alone. This is what originally caught my attention about the company, but I felt it was a great corporation to do my paper on because I have been a customer of XM satellite radio way before they merged with Sirius and I have no complaints.I am a huge fan of Sirius XM radio and if I lost my account with this company, I would be lost, myself. I thought it would be interesting to learn more about this company, so Sirius XM Satellite Radio, Inc. is the company I have decided to do my background report on. What is Sirius XM Satellite Radio? Sirius XM Satellite Radio is the largest radio broadcaster m easured by income and has 25. 6 million subscribers. It offers commercial-free music, premier sports, live events, news, comedy, exclusive talk, entertainment, and the most complete line up of Latin commercial-free music, sports, and talk programming in radio.Sirius XM is one of the world’s largest pure-play audio entertainment companies and is among the largest subscription media companies in the USA offering a collection of exclusive content that covers all genres and interests. (www. siriusxm. com) What Sirius XM Has to Offer its Customers: Sirius XM Satellite Radio is available via satellite, through the Sirius XM Radio apps for smart phones and other connected devices, as well as online at siriusxm. com. You can have their service installed in your home or office and Sirius XM has arrangements with every major automaker for installation of satellite radio in their vehicles.Listeners can personalize Sirius XM music channels using MSXM and listen to thousands of hours of p rogramming using Sirius XM on demand. The service provides premium traffic, weather data, and information services in cars, trucks, RVs, boats, and aircraft through Sirius XM Traffic ®, Naveatherâ„ ¢, Sirius XM Aviation, Sirius Marineâ„ ¢, Sirius Marine Weather, and XMWX Marineâ„ ¢. How Did it All Begin? In 1988, the American Mobile Satellite Corporation (AMSC) was formed and was an association of several organizations who were originally dedicated to satellite broadcasting of telephone, fax and data signals. In 1992, AMSC established a unit called the American Mobile Radio Corporation dedicated to developing a satellite-based digital radio service; this was spun off as XM Satellite Radio Holdings, Inc. in 1999. The satellite service was officially launched on September 25, 2001. On July 29, 2008, XM and their competitor Sirius Satellite Radio decided to merge once the U. S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved, Sirius XM Radio, Inc. was formed and on November 12, 2008, Sirius and XM began broadcasting with their new, combined channel lineups. The proposed merger was opposed by those who felt a merger would create a monopoly. Sirius and XM argued that a merger was the only way that satellite radio would survive. The two companies supposedly weren’t ever a loud to own each other’s license. CEO, Mel Karmazin ignored this rule, proceeding and gambling that the FCC would consider other audio entertainment to be competitors and allow their merger to proceed by waiving the rule.17 months after the companies merger they had a total of more than 18.5 million subscribers. As of quarter 2 of 2013, Sirius XM had over 25 million subscribers. (www. siriusxm. com) Finance Through my research, I came across a letter written by former Chief Executer Officer, Mel Karmazin, to the stockholders and it was dated April 2012. Mr. Karmazin began the letter by saying â€Å"We closed on the merger of Sirius and XM just over three years ago and are p roud of our achievements since then. The merger has delivered extraordinary benefits to the company and its stockholders. Our execution delivered the benefits we promised when we announced the merger in early 2007 and consummated the transaction in the late summer of 2008. Today, we are the largest radio company in the world ranked by revenue. www. siriusxmradio. weebly. com† The letter goes on to disgust how their subscribers grew to an all-time high, totaling almost 21. 9 million by the end of 2011. Year-over-year free cash flow more or less doubled to $416 million. The letter describes how in 2011, they saw their highest subscriber growth since their merger, adding 1.7 million new subscribers. The last thing the letter detailed was the importance of their employees. â€Å"Everything we accomplish and all the value we create is built on the dedication of our outstanding team of employees, who are focused on increasing revenue, managing costs, and delivering profits. www. siri usxmradio. weebly. com† In 2011, Sirius XM Radio’s revenue per employee averaged about $2 million. The greatest financial move for Sirius XM was the merger between Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio in July 2008.The expense on Sirius XM’s behalf is pretty low. On average, an XM satellite will cost around $30,000 to get licensed and launched which will last for 10 years. They pay around $45,000 to artists in royalties which will last about 9 years, so the output cost is extremely low compared to the annual income of $1. 63 billion. There was a close threat of bankruptcy for the company in Feb. of 2009 when their stock price dropped to an all-time low of $0. 05 per share, but, media mogul, John Malone came to their rescue with emergency funding of $5,000,000,000.(www. siriusxm. weebly. com)What’s the Future for Sirius XM Satellite Radio, Inc: The future of Sirius XM Radio is unpredictable with competition growing in the internet radio market threa tening to steal over half of Sirius XM’s business. Sirius XM offers services over the internet and mobile devices, the programming being far from that of other competitors. As long as radios are installed in cars, and if Sirius XM can become the standard alongside AM/FM radio with becoming more involved at a local level, satellite radio  could be the ruler of all radio broadcasting. Sirius XM’s Mission Statement & My Interpretation:â€Å"With Sirius XM, listeners will enjoy the clearest, hottest, hippest, and most provocative radio entertainment, seamlessly across the country. Wherever they live, whenever they want, in any style they can imagine, blues, classical, Tejano, rock, oldies, jazz, R&B, country, gospel, rap, news, talk; Sirius XM Satellite Radio will provide the quality programming, choice and convenience that today’s consumers demand.† (www. siriusxmradio. weebly. com)I think that they are conveying the message that you will be satisfied with an array and variety of music, no matter where you are at and that it will be high quality. Location, Location, Location: Sirius XM Radio is an American broadcasting company that provides satellite radio services operating in the U. S. The company also has a Canadian subsidiary called Sirius XM Canada, an affiliate company that provides Sirius XM service in Canada. (www. wikipedia. org)

Fat Pig a Play by Neil LaBute

Fat Pig a Play by Neil LaBute Neil LaBute titled the play Fat Pig (which first premiered off-Broadway in 2004) to get our attention. However, if he wanted to be blunt, he could have named the play Cowardice, because that is what this comedy-tinged drama is really about. The Plot Tom is a young urban professional who has a bad track record of quickly losing interest in the attractive women he dates. Although in comparison to his crude friend Carter, Tom seems more sensitive than your typical cad. In fact, in the first scene of the play, Tom encounters a smart, flirtatious woman who is described as very plus-sized. When the two connect and she gives him her phone number, Tom is genuinely interested, and the two start dating. However, deep down Tom is shallow. (I know that seems like a paradox, but thats how he is.) He is too self-conscious about what his so-called work friends think about his relationship with Helen. It doesnt help that he dumped a vindictive co-worker named Jeannie who interprets his overweight girlfriend as a personal attack: JEANNIE: Im sure you thought this would hurt me, right? It also doesnt help when his sleazy friend Carter steals a photo of Helen and emails a copy to everyone at the office. But ultimately, this is a play about a young man who comes to terms with who he is: TOM: Im a weak and fearful person, Helen, and Im not gonna get any better. (Spoiler Alert) Male Characters in Fat Pig LaBute has a definite knack for obnoxious, callous male characters. The two guys in Fat Pig follow in this tradition, yet they arent nearly as loathsome than the jerks in LaButes film In the Company of Men. Carter might be a slimeball, but he is not too vicious. At first, he is flabbergasted by the fact that Tom is dating an overweight woman. Also, he firmly believes that Tom and other attractive people should run with [their] own kind. Basically, Carter thinks that Tom is wasting his youth by dating someone of Helens size. However, if one reads the synopsis of the play, it asks: How many insults can you hear before you have to stand up and defend the woman you love? Based upon that blurb, audiences might assume that Tom is pushed to the breaking point by a barrage of awful insults at his girlfriends expense. Yet, Carter is not completely insensitive. In one of the best monologues of the play, Carter tells the story of how he was often embarrassed by his obese mother when in public. He also supplies the wisest piece of advice in the play: CARTER: Do what you want. If you like this girl, then dont listen to a goddamn word anybody says. So, if Carter lays off on the insults and peer pressure, and the vengeful Jeannie calms down and moves on with her life, why does Tom break up with Helen? He cares too much about what others think. His self-consciousness prevents him from pursuing what could be an emotionally fulfilling relationship. Female Characters in Fat Pig LaBute offers one well-developed female character (Helen) and a secondary female character who seems like an artistic misfire. Jeannie doesnt get much stage time, but whenever present she seems like a typical jilted co-worker seen in countless sitcoms and movies. WireImage / Getty Images But her stereotypical shallowness provides a nice foil for Helen, a woman who is bright, self-aware, and honest. She encourages Tom to be honest as well, often sensing his awkwardness when they are out in public. She falls hard and quick for Tom. At the end of the play, she confesses: HELEN: I love you so much, I really do, Tom. Feel a connection with you that I havent allowed myself to dream of, let alone be a part of, in so long. Ultimately, Tom cannot love her, because he is too paranoid about what others think. Therefore, as sad as the ending of the play might seem, its good that Helen and Tom face the truth of their faltering relationship early on. (Real life dysfunctional couples could learn a valuable lesson from this play.) Comparing Helen to someone like Nora from A Dolls House reveals how empowered and assertive women have become in the last few centuries. Nora builds an entire marriage based upon facades. Helen insists upon facing the truth before allowing a serious relationship to continue. Theres a quirk about her personality. She loves old war movies, mostly obscure World War II flicks. This little detail might just be something that LaBute invented to make her unique from other women (thereby helping to explain Toms attraction for her). In addition, it may also reveal the type of man she needs to find. The American soldiers of World War II, by and large, were courageous and willing to fight for what they believed in, even at the cost of their lives. These men are part of what journalist Tom Brokaw described as The Greatest Generation. Men like Carter and Tom pale in comparison. Perhaps Helen is obsessed with the films, not because of the pretty explosions but because they remind her of the male figures in her family, and provide a model for potential mates, reliable, stalwart men who arent afraid to take a risk. WireImage / Getty Images The Importance of Fat Pig At times LaButes dialogue seems like it is trying too hard to emulate David Mamet. And the short nature of the play (one of those no bak 90-minute ventures like Shanleys Doubt) makes it reminiscent of those ABC After School Specials from my childhood. They were short films that focused on cautionary tales of modern dilemmas: bullying, anorexia, peer pressure, self-image. They didnt have as many swear words as LaButes plays, though. And the secondary characters (Carter and Jeannie) barely escape their sitcomish roots. Despite these flaws, Fat Pig triumphs with its central characters. I believe in Tom. I have, unfortunately, been Tom; there have been times when I have said things or made choices based upon the expectations of others. And I have felt like Helen (maybe not overweight, but someone who feels like they are removed from those labeled as attractive by mainstream society). Theres no happy ending in the play, but fortunately, in real life, the Helens of the world (sometimes) find the right guy, and the Toms of the world (occasionally) learn to how to overcome their fear of other peoples opinions. If more of us paid attention to the lessons of the play, we could replace those parenthetic adjectives to often and almost always.

None Example

None Example None – Coursework Example Price Ceiling January 11, Price Ceiling Price ceiling is implemented in a bid to avoid consumer exploitation by ensuring that the basic commodities are available at affordable prices. In the oil industry, the prices have been sky rocketing thus adversely affecting the economy. This is mainly because it constitutes a significant percentage of energy sources. In the implementation of price control, consideration on the cause of rise in fuel prices should be considered. In some instances, the main cause of the rise in the prices is the shortage in supply. Under such circumstances, price ceiling is not a solution. As such, increasing production and use of other alternative sources of energy could be the ultimate solution (Whittington & Delaney, 2011). The forces of demand and supply determine the equilibrium point. As such if the price ceiling is above the equilibrium price, then it has no effect on the economy. When price ceiling is below the equilibrium price, adverse consequences such as supply shortage due to increased demand and reduced production as a larger group of the population will be able to purchase the commodity (McEachern, 2011). Moreover lowering of quality in a bid to reduce production cost, discrimination, and the increased use of black market is evident (Arnold, 2010). Due to the shortage, queuing for the product is evident with the elderly and physically challenged being disadvantaged. This is usually addressed through rationing. When operating in the black market, the customers are not protected and therefore they could encounter violence or even theft (Mankiw, 2011). Thus, when the gasoline prices rises above $4 and the government places a price ceiling, consideration is necessary as if implemented for long could have adverse effects on the economyReferencesArnold, R. A. (2010). Microeconomics. Stamford, Connecticut, USA: Cengage Learning. Mankiw, N. G. (2011). Principles of Microeconomics. Stamford, Connecticut, USA: Cengage Learning.McEacher n, W. A. (2011). None Example None – Essay Example Contrast between the approach employed by Mahathir towards the indigenous business people in Malaysia with the one taken by Suharto in Indonesia. Thepolitical regime in Malaysia is composed of a multi-party system. Its political process is "consociationalism" meaning, the interests of the community are resolved within the grand coalition framework. Over the recent years, there has been increased media coverage in politics making it transparent to the citizens. Malaysia is a multi-cultural nation whose population comprises of three main groups namely ethnic Indian, ethnic Chinese and Bumiputera. Of the three groups, the Bumiputera are the indigenous people. During the period of British rule in Malaysia, the ethnic Chinese grew to be the dominant ethnic group in the Malaysia’s business sector. This brought tension between them and the Bumiputera after independence. This led to the adoption of a new economic policy in an attempt to equalize power between the Chinese minorities who were dominant in business with the Bumiputeras. This economic policy was instituted by Mahathir bin Mohamed, Malaysia’s Prime Minister in 1981 (Gomez and Jomo 1997). Gomez and Jomo (1997) explain that the new business policy was meant to equalize business power between the Bumiputera, and the ethnic Chinese. Through this policy, Mahathir gave preferences to Bumiputera, the indigenous Malaysian over the ethnic Chinese. For example, it required that companies which exceeded a certain size should have a Bumiputera partner. Though the policy did not last long, it brought long lasting harmonious existence in the business sector between the two groups. In the other hand, ethnic Chinese comprise just a small percentage of the Indonesian population. Despite this, they also control a bigger share of the wealth of the nation (Victor 1992). This greatly disadvantaged the indigenous Indonesian business people given the existing economic policies that did not fight for them. For example, during the time of the reign of Suharto, he favored the economic aspects of Chinese. Suharto’s favor towards the economic aspects of the Chinese caused the Chinese business community to be advantaged over the indigenous business community for a long time. As a result of this, the indigenous people held sentiments towards this (BBC News). We can therefore say that Suharto failed to accord equal opportunities for the indigenous business as compared to Malaysia’s Mahathir. This situation led to hatred towards the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia. Recently, there has been violence in Indonesia which target the ethnic Chinese population. Conclusion Mahathir towards the indigenous business people in Malaysia entailed the equalization of business power between the indigenous Bumiputeras and the ethnic Chinese. Contrastingly, Suharto’s approach to did not offer such equal opportunities for business to the indigenous business people. As a result of the two contrasting approaches, Malaysia has become an example of interethnic harmony during the period of economic crisis opposed to Indonesia where thousands of ethnic were massacred during the 1997, anti-Chinese riots. Such hatred emerges from the sentiments held by the people towards being disadvantaged economically in their own country. References BBC News (21st May, 1998). The role of ethnic Chinese. Online: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/events/indonesia/your_comments_so_far/93837.stm. Viewed on 25th May, 2011. Gomez Edmund and Jomo, K. (1997). Malaysias Political Economy: Politics, Patronage, and Profits. Cambridge University Press. Cambridge. Victor David (1992). International Business Communication. HarperCollins. New York. Discussion questions 1. What motivated Suharto to have a discriminative approach to the indigenous business people? Chinese are naturally business people and their involvement in Indonesian business was likely to drive the country’s economy to greater heights. The Chinese were more able in terms of capital which encouraged the seting up of private businesses to boost the economy. Suharto had married a Chinese woman 2. Did Suharto’s approach to the indigenous business people disadvantage them alone the whole economy? It led to increased food prices It lowered employment rate as Chinese firms imported cheap labor from china Led to a substantial net flow of profits as Chinese businesses channeled profits to their home country. None Example None – Coursework Example Buy one, get one free Buy one; get one free is a sales promotion strategy usually adopted by marketers to attract s. They know the psychologyof the consumers very well and try to exploit it with help of ads like these. It should be noted that no non-charitable business groups can offer anything free to the customers. If they offer something free, definitely that price of the free product will be included in the price of actual product purchased. It is evident that a business group cannot survive for longer periods if they keep on providing free gifts to its customers. The prices of products offered on â€Å"buy one get one free† basis often end up in buying two products at the regular price. For example, if the seller offers you a product for $ 500 on buy one get one free basis, the actual price of the single product could be $ 250 only. In other words, â€Å"the markets have priced the free item into the price of the first item† (Lu) Consumers may not aware of it and t hey will be trapped by the marketers. In normal cases, it is not necessary for the governments to regulate promotions like these since business groups have the right to publish eye catching advertisements to attract customers. However, it is the duty of the governments to warn the people about the baselessness of such advertisements. It should be noted that tobacco companies need to display the statutory warning against smoking on all advertisements. Governments can think in terms of enforcing such measures on buy one get one free ads also in order to warn the people about the tricks involved in such ads. To conclude, buy one get one free is a fraudulent marketing activity performed by business people to attract customers and it should be regulated with the help of laws.
